e-Sword on Mac and Linux

e-Sword on Mac and LinuxMore e-Sword news this week:  Thanks to CodeWeavers, you can now run e-Sword Bible study software on Mac and Linux with the same functionality it has on Windows computers!  The solution?  CrossOver.

CrossOver allows you to run Windows programs without a Windows operating system, which makes this solution different from popular virtual platforms, such as Bootcamp, Parallels, and VMware Fusion (all of which still require a Windows operating system and costly licensing).

Although this is welcome news for Macintosh and Linux users, the solution isn’t free.  However, by partnering with eStudySource.com, the cost is fairly reasonable.  There is a free 30-day trial of CrossOver, and, if you like it, you can purchase a standard license for less than $24 using a special discount code.

Instructions for downloading and installing CrossOver can be found here.  These instructions include steps for downloading and installing a special CrossOver version of e-Sword, which is free.  If you prefer to view a video tutorial of this process, see this YouTube video.

After installing CrossOver and e-Sword (see above), follow these steps to install your various e-Sword modules (Bibles, commentaries, dictionaries, etc).

CodeWeavers offers support via email at ninjas@codeweavers.com.  They also provide an online Ticket System, FAQ, knowledge base, documentation, forums, and training videos at their support site.

If you use e-Sword on Mac or Linux, let us know about your experience in the comments below.

  1. I’m not currently a Mac user, but Pastor Kevin Purcell, of KevinPurcell.org fame, confirms that e-Sword does indeed work on a Mac via CrossOver. Nice! :)

  2. I’ve been using e-Sword on a Linux box for the last three years. (Basically, since Ubuntu Christian Edition was released.)

There is at least one screenshot of e-Sword 7.x running on a Mac, using CrossOver, in _The e-Sword Utility Program FAQ: Section # 1_.
