e-Sword v10.0.1

e-SwordVersion 10.0.1 of the popular (and free) e-Sword Bible study software is now available. This is actually the release candidate for version 10, not the official release. However, it is very stable and offers some great new features.

UPDATE (November 14, 2011): e-Sword version 10 was officially released.

You can learn more about e-Sword here, and you can download the latest version here.

There are three significant additions in version 10. My personal favorite – and the most promising for future possibilities – is the SermonAudio.com tool, which allows you to listen to sermons on any Bible passage from the vast library at www.SermonAudio.com without even leaving e-Sword.

If you’re not familiar with SermonAudio.com, it is “the largest library of audio sermons on the web from conservative Christian churches and ministries”, such as John MacArthur, R. C. Sproul, and Ken Ham. (We previously explored SermonAudio.com in our series on iPad Bible study apps.)

When you first open SermonAudio.com in e-Sword (Tools > SermonAudio.com), the sermons displayed will correspond to the current verse(s) displayed in your Bible panel, and they will be listed in order of popularity with the ‘most-listened-to’ sermons at the top of the list. (You can click any of the column headers to sort in a different order.)

SermonAudio.com opens in a separate window, which is nice, because you can continue to work in e-Sword while listening to sermons (great way to take notes!). To hear a sermon, simply click its title. Use the playbar in the lower left corner to control playback.

To hear sermons for a different Bible passage, go to the Bible menu and select Lookup Scripture Reference.

Redesigned Editors

The Journal Notes, Study Notes, and Topic Notes editors have been redesigned and now accept pictures, tables, columns, headers, and footers! There’s even a new page layout view.

These are welcome additions for anyone who likes to add images to their notes or organize their thoughts into tables.

Reference Library

The completely new Reference Library opens in a separate, resizable window and allows you to read, filter, and search your topic modules. (Although you can only search within one module at a time in version 10.0.1, I hear that a future release will allow you to search across all of them.) In addition to reading your TOPX (topic) modules, the Reference Library also supports a new REFX (reference) module type, which is encrypted and compressed.

To open the Reference Library, click the library icon on the toolbar, or go to Tools > Reference Library.

Feedback and Support

If you want to provide feedback on this release candidate for version 10 of e-Sword or if you have questions, the dedicated forum thread at BibleSupport.com is the best place to go. It is being monitored by the e-Sword developer, Rick Meyers, for bugs and feature requests, and you will always find other e-Sword users ready and willing to help.

Oh, and if you have found value in the free e-Sword Bible study program, consider making a donation to the developer to support e-Sword’s ongoing ministry.

(Psalm4 is not affiliated with e-Sword. We just love the software!)
