WordSearch 10 & iPad App

Version 10 of the veteran WordSearch Bible study program was released a few weeks ago, and the long-awaited iPad companion app has also just been released.

WordSearch 10

WordSearch is a full-featured desktop Bible study software application for Windows and Mac.

WordSearch 10

Surprisingly, the latest version costs only $29.95 (at the time of this writing). Perhaps this new approach reflects the vision of a new owner, seeing as WordSearch (along with QuickVerse) was acquired by LifeWay Christian Resources in 2011.

WordSearch has an extensive catalog of resources, some of which are free.

Here’s a list of the most prominent new features in WordSearch 10:

  • Desktop Templates: Customize your workspace (desktop), depending on the task you want to accomplish, and save it as a template. Set up multiple templates to streamline your workflow.
  • Audible Pronunciation: Nice feature that audibly pronounces over 20,000 words, including those tongue-twisting Hebrew names!
  • Facebook & Twitter Integration: Share anything without having to leave WordSearch.
  • Sermon & Illustration Organizer: Collect sermons and illustrations, add tags and scripture references, and track which ones you’ve used.
  • Verse Explorer: Search for a verse or passage, and WordSearch will provide you with links to all the relevant entries in related resources that you own. It is similar to Logos’ Passage Guide and OliveTree’s Resource Guide, though perhaps not quite as polished or convenient (primarily because you have to specify which resources you want to search).
  • Morph Explorer: “This lightning-fast feature lets you select any lemma (root word), lexeme (word form in a sentence), or parsing element (a specific tense, gender, number, etc.), search for it in relevant titles, and see results instantly. This is sure to be a helpful tool for those immersed in Greek manuscripts.”
    • Note: To use the new Morph Explorer, you will need the UBS 4th Edition Greek New Testament. You can purchase it individually, or save a pretty penny by purchasing it as part of the Greek Morphology Bundle.

Training videos are currently in the works, but, until they’re available, be sure to check out the FAQs. You can also register for live training events (which are free).

WordSearch iPad AppWordSearch iPad App

The WordSearch iPad app has finally made its debut. It’s not the most robust Bible study app available, but it is free and includes the following basic feature set:

  • Option to download WordSearch resources that you already own to your iPad
  • Dual panes for viewing two resources simultaneously
  • Search
  • Highlights, bookmarks, notes

Here’s a brief video overview:

Although the new WordSearch iPad app isn’t quite on par with some other Bible study apps (see here and here), it’s still a good start. With the publishing and merchandising might of LifeWay now supporting it, I expect it to only improve with time.

It’s also worth mentioning that WordSearch offers a free desktop program for Windows and Mac called Bible Explorer. It has limited features, but it does allow you to use many of the same resources (Bibles, commentaries, dictionaries, etc) in the WordSearch catalog.

And if you decide to later upgrade to the WordSearch desktop program, all your existing Bible Explorer resources will simply migrate over to the new program.

It will be interesting to see if LifeWay continues to develop Bible Explorer or if it will eventually be phased out in favor of focusing on the flagship WordSearch program.

Wrap Up

  • WordSearch was acquired by Lifeway in 2011.
  • WordSearch 10 has been released with several new features and costs $29.95.
  • The WordSearch iPad app is now available, and it’s free.
  • Bible Explorer is a free alternative to WordSearch and is a good way to get your feet wet in the extensive WordSearch catalog.

With two free programs (and over 200 free resources) and a full-featured desktop program costing less than $30, WordSearch has something useful for everyone. (By the way, here’s how you can get the excellent Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) for free.)

Do you use any of the WordSearch programs? What do you think? How do they compare to other programs you’ve used?

I use wordsearch 7 on my desk top and would like to upgrade that product to a later version like wordsearch 9 or 10 but I also have have a laptop and Motorola Zoom tablet that I would like to operate the program from as well. What are my options? Do I need to purchase 9 for my desk and lap top and 10 for my tablet?

  2. Hi Paul,

You can upgrade to WordSearch 10 on your desktop for $30. Although WordSearch has a new mobile app for iPad, they do not yet have an app for Android devices like the Motorola Xoom. You might want to submit a request for an Android app to their developers at this email address: sales@wordsearchbible.com

For a Bible study app that works on desktop computers and Android tablets, you might consider OliveTree BibleReader: http://olivetree.com/

I love Wordserch10 and am excited to use it. Do you think you’ll be coming out with an Android app for it anytime soon.

  8. Hi Alfred,

I’m not the developer for WordSearch, so I couldn’t say if they’re planning an Android app. :) But you could ask WordSearch: https://www.wordsearchbible.com/support

  10. Please give me back the old version of 10 for my ipad. Books are missing no double panes, no syncing bibles. It has crippled my mobile study option. I have used word search over 12 years and I am looking for something to let me study again. Please spend some time developing this new ipad app. I just want to be honest with you, this version just dropped 5 upgrades, unless theirs a tutorial I don’t know of yet.
    Respectfully, Lead Pastor James Rivera.
